ADHD: Comprehensive Psychosocial, Pharmacological, and Combined Treatments
This symposium will provide an overview and specific knowledge about evidence-based treatments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and how to implement those treatments.
ADHD is a chronic mental health disorder associated with impairments in relationships with teachers, parents and peers. ADHD interferes with academic achievements in childhood and leads to potentially adverse outcomes throughout life. With a prevalence rate of 2–9 percent, ADHD is a major public health problem in the United States and worldwide.
The course will cover the societal significance of ADHD as well as discuss
evidence-based diagnosis and assessment practices for this disorder. Primarily, it will cover the state-of-the-art evidence-based interventions, including psychosocial, pharmaceutical, and multimodal treatments. The emphasis will be on dealing with ADHD in school, home and peer settings.
Participants wil gain knowledge of:
- Evidence-based diagnosis and assessment of ADHD as they relate
to treatment
- Evidence-based psychological treatment of ADHD, including
behavioral parent training and school-based interventions
- Group-based programs and school-wide programs
- Saturday, After School and Summer Treatment programs
- Interventions for peer relationships including school-based
peer interventions
- Current information on psychosocial treatments
- Evidence-based pharmacological treatments of ADHD, including procedures for determining whether medication in school is necessary
- Integration and sequencing of behavioral and pharmacological approaches to treatments
- Components of a comprehensive, chronic care model of treatment
for ADHD
