This conference is for professionals at the high school, community college or university level who are interested in creating or enhancing a math tutoring service.

You will:
  • Learn how to determine whether a math lab would be worthwhile for your school
  • Gain knowledge on how to prepare to set up a math lab
  • Learn ways to improve the effectiveness of an existing math lab
  • Discover the resources available for setting up and operating an effective math lab
  • Network with your counterparts at other schools
  • Share ideas and experiences

7 breakout sessions will offer a variety of topics such as:

  • Avoiding math lab pitfalls
  • Budgeting for the math lab
  • Designing an effective math lab environment
  • Hiring, training and utilizing math tutors
  • Marketing a math lab to faculty and students
  • Online tutoring
  • Renting graphing calculators
  • Understanding resources needed for a math lab

 

Keynote Topic

"Program Evaluation for Math Tutoring Centers: A Nicety or a Necessity?"

Should a program evaluation be created specifically for math tutoring centers? Michelle Heckman, Coordinator of the BGSU Math & Stats Tutoring Center, will discuss her research and ideas about this topic. In addition, conference attendees will be asked to participate in a discussion activity on the topic.

Coordinator, BGSU Math & Stats Tutoring Center

In her six years as coordinator, Michelle has restructured the tutoring center and implemented new procedures to benefit students. She has taught developmental and entry level math courses at BGSU for the last 10 years, has co-authored Elementary Algebra: An Experiment and Discovery Approach, and has created and hosted two national conferences for math labs/centers. Michelle has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, a master's degree in Teaching Mathematics, and a graduate certificate in Organizational Change. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Research and Measurement.

You are cordially invited to share your expertise in implementing, operating and/or working in a math tutoring service by submitting a proposal to present.

Submission deadline: Monday, June 1, 2009.
Presenters will be notified by June 19 if they have been accepted.
